Chapter Five

RAV

The sun never shone in Wonderland. If it did, vampires would be trapped inside nearly half their lives to avoid turning to ash. So, instead, time was told by how dark the sky was: pitch black at night, ash gray at midday, and varying shades between. Judging by the deep charcoal, Rav had spent the entire night with Imogen in the Knave’s bed. Ferris had undoubtedly attempted to sleep at some point, and Rav hoped the fool had heard the queen screaming his name.

Fucking shitbag. He’d never understand why, out of all the servant’s Imogen killed, it had never been that one.

Alice, on the other hand, would be interesting. A mortal who wanted to be a vampire and thought them to be romantic instead of ruthless… What would she do now that her wish had been granted? Over the centuries, only a handful of humans had wanted to be turned, but this was different. Humans no longer truly believed in the existence of Rav’s kind. He couldn’t help being curious about how she would react. Would parts of this world live up to her expectations, or would she mope about because it was so vastly different? And the first feeding—would that intrigue or repulse her? There were so many questions that he wanted answers to.

“What are you thinking about, Rabbit?” Imogen asked as she stepped into her gown.

Rav slipped his shirt over his head. “Hmm?”

“You look as if you’re ready to cause trouble.”

Rav ran a hand through his tumbled hair. “No trouble. I’m just thinking of the girl.”

Imogen’s gaze took on a hard edge. She raised an eyebrow, silently letting Rav know he needed to elaborate.

He stepped forward, buttoning the back of her dress without her having to ask. “I’m curious how similar we are to what this new … vampire culture thinks. Do you suspect that it will affect her change at all?”

“I don’t see how similarities between her expectations and reality would have any impact.” Imogen bent and grabbed one of her shoes from under the bed. “It’s not their mental strength that’s tested.”

Rav nodded, though he already knew that. The change could be brutal. A vampire—one stronger than Ferris or any of the dungeon guards—sometimes had to coax them through it. Even then, there was no guarantee they would survive. Some bodies were simply not equipped. Humans called it survival of the fittest.

“You want to study her,” Imogen said with a roll of her eyes.

Studying things was a habit of his, not that he always knew what he was searching for. Just … something. And it gave his life a touch of focus. After centuries, living could become dull without a purpose. Even a meaningless one. Rav shrugged. “Let me have my fun.”

“Fine.” Imogen swiped her second shoe from the floor and crossed the room, running a finger down his cheek. “Conduct your little experiment, quench your thirst for useless knowledge, then come back to me. I’m going to bathe.”

“I’ll join you after,” he promised.

The queen sauntered past him, swatting his naked ass.
